ADMINISTRATIVE COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS
Monday, Jun. 9, 2008
- Trustees Committee Report: Claudia Lempp
It is the trustee’s recommendation to sell what is known as the Chatham property because it is in the historic district. If we tear it down, we will need to wait three years to do so before putting anything else on that site. The trustees met with the Finance committee and they approve the decision. We have an appraisal from last year at $96,000. The reassessment was for $108,000 and it does not include the house because that is not worth anything. The house was built in 1901 and we purchased it in January, 2004. Consensus agreement was reached to give the trustees the authority to move forward in selling the property.
- Campus Building Program Update: Jeff Babcock
We are now in step 3 of the building program. The general idea was to put together a steering team to move step 3 forward. The Steering Team will consist of the Campus Design Team, the Campus Construction Team, Finance Team, Generosity Team, Campus Building Campaign Team, and the Senior Pastor & Staff Team. Jeff shared the plan and the role of each team in the plan. We have a capital campaign for the building and a generosity campaign for the operating budget.
- Pledging Campaign Timing Discussion: Jon Brandt
At the first generosity meeting the committee discussed how they would move forward with the Generosity Campaign knowing that they had a Capital Campaign in the works. Discussion with Charlie Haley occurred and his thoughts were that having the capital campaign so close behind the Generosity Campaign would cost us thousands of dollars. One thought was to move the Capital Campaign from November to February which would push back breaking ground as well. Pat Luna suggested that we complete our operating budget first (our first fruits) and then head into the Capital Fund Campaign. The Administrative Council consensus was to keep the timeline as it is.
- Campus Building Program Nomination & Updates: Barbara Miller
The Lay Leadership Committee considered individuals gifts and talents before selecting members for the two new Campus Building Program Teams.
Two new teams are joining into the overall team: The Campus Construction Team which will consist of Ben White as the chair, and the team members: Lee Baker, Matt Bolin, Greg Jonczyk, Michael Monfort,, Kimball Shahrokhi, and Tina Skinner. A motion was made by Jon Brandt and seconded by Nancy Wiersma to approve this team. Motion carried.
The 2nd new team is the Building Campaign Team which will consist of Pam Keenan as the Campaign Director and the team members. A motion was made by Bill Kempffer and seconded by Chap Haddon to approve Pam Keenan as the Director of the team and if Pam feels as though she needs assistance with a co-director, Admin. Council will approve it. Motion carried.
The Worship Committee has been restructured and team Leads have been designated for each service. Carol Spencer was brought forward as a nominee for the position of Worship Chairperson. A motion was made by Jessica Mathews and seconded by Jeanne Hack. Motion carried.
The Lay Leadership Team had a vacancy and they decided to fill it with a young adult. Laura Atkins was brought forth as a nominee for the Lay Leadership Team member. Pam Keenan gave the motion and it was seconded by Larry Jordan. Motion carried.
Jeff Babcock has developed a preliminary team of couples as Campaign Team Chairs under the Building Campaign Team. Discussions regarding the team names were entertained. If there are names or recommendations for this committee please bring them forward to Barbara Miller by June 17, 2008 when their committee meets next.
- Storytelling Festival: Owen Barrow and Carol Hoal
Carol Hoal discussed storytelling and people that have the gift of storytelling. The revival of the tradition is presented in a Storytelling Festival. Carol and Alan Howl have participated in organizing and participating in Storytelling Festivals. Owen discussed the ideas of a Storytelling Festival at Apex UMC were we could show good hospitality to the community. It is an opportunity to offer a safe space for people to come and hear stories. In discussions, Owen and Carol feel that they can raise $10,000 in support from the community (business, etc.) and supporting a particular mission that the church is already involved in. All of the contracts that the church would sign give us a 60 day out option. The idea has been introduced to the Trustees and the Finance Committee and has received approval from those two teams. They have budged $750 this year for the Storytelling Festival and the total cost is $6,850 plus transportation. They believe that the $10,000 will cover all their expenses. A motion was made by Anne Harrison and seconded by Bill Kempffer to move ahead with this program. Motion carried.
- Lead Pastor: David Brownlee
Jose Luis Villasenor is now a ¾ time staff member will be appointed by the bishop as a special member.
This coming Sunday is a big day for Acts Church as they come onto our campus. We will need to be mindful of our service times so that we can make room for the Acts service. They will be having 45 minute services. We are really hopeful that they will be able to add new members and encourage them to strengthen.
This week is our annual conference and it will be held in Greenville. We have 4 lay leaders going with the Clergy, Owen, Lee and Judy. Glenn will be there doing work for the board of ordained ministries. Jose will be licensed and Tim Catlett and Owen Barrow will be commissioned. Wed. night at 7:00 is the commissioning and ordination.
A complete copy of the Administrative Council minutes are available from the church office.
